The narrative follows Sada, the third son of Count Vijayan, as he embarks on a journey to join the military. Despite his noble lineage, Sada finds himself financially constrained, leading him to opt for a cheaper, albeit uncomfortable, cargo wagon for his travels. He reflects on the harsh realities of noble life, where financial prudence and reputation are paramount, often leading to ruthless decisions to protect family fortunes. His father, a pragmatic man, has advised Sada and his brothers to pursue careers as either civil servants or soldiers, as they lack the "talent for charm" needed to secure advantageous marriages.
Sada's older brother, Saji, chose to become a doctor, while Sada, initially indifferent, leans towards the military. He considers various branches: the prestigious Imperial Guard, the Eastern Army (led by the Crown Prince), the Southern Army (with its navy), and the Western Army (with its air force and flying dragons). However, his true desire lies with the Northern Army, a decision his father would likely disapprove of. His fascination with the Northern Army stems from its legendary warrior, Rii Takeo, known as the "Northern Tiger," a commoner who achieved remarkable victories in the Imperial Games, including leading the Northern Army to an unprecedented win against the Imperial Guard. Sada is particularly inspired by Takeo's skill and the fact that he is a commoner who has risen through the ranks.
During his journey to the Northern Army's First Garrison, Sada and his attendant, Tobi, are attacked by a pack of seven orcs. Despite his limited combat experience and a bow unsuitable for such a formidable foe, Sada bravely defends himself, managing to fell six of the orcs with his arrows. Just as the last orc is about to overwhelm them, Rii Takeo appears and swiftly defeats the creature. Deeply moved by this rescue and inspired by Takeo, Sada decides to join the Northern Army immediately, foregoing a return home. He is offered a generous deal by Kaluah, the Assistant General of the Northern Army, including free lodging, meals, and immediate pay, with the promise of covering all his necessary equipment costs.
Meanwhile, the news of the six unblemished orc carcasses, attributed to Sada's archery, spreads like wildfire. This feat is considered an unprecedented achievement, as orc hides are highly prized for their durability, and unblemished hides are exceptionally rare. The armor merchant Zaz and the guild master Reiko investigate, confirming the unusual circumstances of the kills. Reiko, recognizing the Vijayan family crest on Sada's arrows, realizes the potential implications for recruitment and seeks to secure Sada for the Northern Army before other factions can intervene.
Sada's father, Count Vijayan, receives a brief note from his son announcing his enlistment in the Northern Army. He learns from Tobi, who has resigned his position as a butler-in-training to serve Takeo, about Sada's heroic actions and his decision to join the Northern Army. Despite his initial surprise and frustration that Sada chose the Northern Army over more prestigious options, and that his son's exceptional archery skills were previously unknown to him, Count Vijayan ultimately accepts his son's choice, recognizing Sada's talent and the unique circumstances of his enlistment. He sends Sada a letter of encouragement and a family heirloom sword, along with funds for his enlistment. The narrative concludes with Sada embarking on his new life in the Northern Army, his path intertwined with the legendary "Northern Tiger."
