Chapters 3 through 12 of the light novel detail the initial interactions between the protagonist, Fuyuki Kamikawa, and Yukihime Shimagawa, a classmate who has been absent due to bullying. Fuyuki, a transfer student from out of town, struggles with social interaction and has few friends, primarily communicating with his homeroom teacher, Yayoi Natsume. Natsume, a well-meaning but somewhat overbearing teacher, enlists Fuyuki's help with Shimagawa, believing his lack of prior connection to her makes him a suitable candidate to approach her.
Fuyuki visits Shimagawa's home, finding her frail and overwhelmed. After she collapses from apparent malnutrition and stress, Fuyuki, despite his awkwardness and lack of experience with girls, offers to cook for her. He attempts to make omurice, but his first attempt is a disaster. Shimagawa, however, finds it surprisingly appealing and asks him to make more, even for him, expressing a desire to eat together. This shared meal, despite its culinary shortcomings, marks a turning point, as Shimagawa experiences a rare moment of comfort and Fuyuki realizes he enjoys helping her.
Their interactions continue as Fuyuki visits Shimagawa again, bringing her a chiffon cake she baked. During these meetings, Fuyuki learns more about Shimagawa's struggles with anxiety and over-breathing, which are exacerbated by social interaction. He also discovers her deep affection for cats, particularly his own cat, Ruru, whom he adopted after finding it during a storm. Shimagawa's parents, concerned about her recovery, request Fuyuki's continued support, hoping he can help her gradually re-engage with the world, starting with small steps like leaving her house.
Meanwhile, Fuyuki encounters Hikaru Kaisaki, Shimagawa's childhood friend. Kaisaki reveals the extent of the bullying Shimagawa endured, stemming from her earnest nature being exploited by classmates who teased her. Kaisaki expresses regret for not intervening more effectively and admits to his own inability to help Shimagawa overcome her anxiety. Fuyuki, feeling a growing protectiveness towards Shimagawa, asserts his intention to support her, even suggesting a collaboration with Kaisaki to help Shimagawa recover. The chapters conclude with Fuyuki and Shimagawa solidifying their friendship, with Shimagawa expressing her desire to be friends and Fuyuki reciprocating, emphasizing his commitment to her well-being. Shimagawa, inspired by Fuyuki's support, begins to take tentative steps towards recovery, finding solace and strength in their burgeoning connection.
