Igarashi Kazuto, a normal middle school student, found his life shattered after his friend, Hiroto Hoshimura, framed him for theft. Bullied and failing his exams, Kazuto, overwhelmed by despair, attempted suicide by jumping from a 40-meter building. As he fell, he wished for a happier, more fulfilling life. His wish was answered by a mysterious woman who, after his death, granted him immense physical ability, all magic aptitude, and limitless mana capacity, sending him to a new world for a "second life."
Kazuto awoke in a vast grassland, disoriented but quickly realizing he had been reincarnated into a world where magic might exist. Following a path, he soon encountered Yuina, a kind, noble-looking girl with blonde hair and blue eyes, surrounded by armed bandits. Despite his past weakness, Kazuto's body moved on its own, and he effortlessly defeated the attackers with his newfound strength, accidentally killing one. He felt a strange lack of remorse, attributing it to his own experience with death, but still prayed for the fallen. Yuina, an aspiring Magic Knight who had run away from home after a family dispute, was grateful and noted Kazuto's rare surname suggested nobility, a concept foreign to him. She explained the world's magic system (five attributes, magic stones, formulas), the existence of mindless Mana Beasts, sentient Mana People, and the Magic Knights who combat them.
Yuina invited Kazuto to Alstella, where she was enrolling in the Magic Knight Academy. Kazuto, needing a place to establish himself, agreed. Upon arrival, he was awestruck by the city's massive scale and the academy's castle-like structure. Yuina convinced him to take the entrance exam, highlighting its benefits. They met the revered headmaster, Sigurd Lacerta, a hero who single-handedly defeated 100 dragons, a fact Kazuto was ignorant of due to his origins. Kazuto failed the written test, unable to read the local Calque language. During the mana measurement test, Yuina achieved a rare "Red Level," but Kazuto's turn was unprecedented: his mana instantly turned the stone black and shattered it, indicating "immeasurable, Black Level or higher" mana. This drew immense attention, much to Kazuto's discomfort.
In the final mock battle, Kazuto initially planned to lose to avoid standing out. However, his opponent, the arrogant noble Slothus Lauter, insulted Kazuto and his parents, igniting Kazuto's rage. Abandoning his plan, Kazuto brutally beat Slothus, winning the match decisively. He was among the 150 successful applicants and was assigned Week, a gentle commoner Yuina had defeated, as his roommate.
Kazuto's first day of classes introduced him to Mels Heikel, his kind-seeming magic teacher (and the intellectual exam proctor), and Scard Kaison, his hot-blooded swordsmanship teacher (the scary exam proctor). Scard warned Kazuto about the notorious Lauter family and, cryptically, "never to anger Heikel." In magic class, Kazuto struggled with mana control, repeatedly shattering expensive magic stones due to his overwhelming mana. Mels, revealing a terrifying, explosive personality when angered, cornered Kazuto, forbidding him from using magic until he mastered control and telling him to read textbooks he couldn't understand. Terrified, Kazuto secretly asked Week to teach him the Calque language.
While slowly learning to read, Kazuto discovered a textbook explaining that individuals with naturally high mana often struggle with initial control but improve over time. With a basic magic test and a mock battle test announced for a week later, Kazuto was desperate. He tried to buy more magic stones for practice, but Week was too exhausted. Yuina, however, happily agreed to accompany him, interpreting it as a date, a fact Kazuto remained oblivious to. During their shopping trip, Kazuto realized the exorbitant cost of magic stones, understanding Mels's anger. He bought seven stones, and during lunch, Yuina began to confide in him about her past, but their conversation was cut short by their food.
Back at the dorm, Kazuto woke the sleeping Week with a "Morning Break," a family tradition. He sought Week's advice on mana control, learning it was about "imaging" the mana flow. Despite trying to visualize it like a faucet, Kazuto continued to break stones, realizing he needed more time to solidify his image. On test day, after watching Yuina and Week pass easily, Kazuto, though nervous, successfully cast the basic fire and water spells by carefully imaging a minimal mana flow. For the wind spell, he over-concentrated, releasing a powerful gust that blew him back but didn't break the stone. Mels, shocked by the spell's intermediate-level power, still passed him. Reflecting on Kazuto, Mels, despite her earlier anger and regret, felt a renewed sense of hope for her "problem child," noticing a crack in the magic stone he used, a testament to his immense, barely contained power.
