Asuta Tsutsumi is a 17-year-old high school sophomore. He was an apprentice chef working at "Tsurumi-ya," a popular diner run by his father. One day, Tsurumi-ya was engulfed in flames. Asuta, jumping into the inferno to save a santoku knife—a tool that was like his father's very soul—perished there.

When he next awoke, he found himself in the heart of an unknown jungle. Attacked by a wild beast named Giba, which resembled a wild boar, Asuta was rescued by a girl named Ai-Fa, who claimed to be one of the "Forest Dwellers." It was then he learned that this was a different world.
