The story begins with Baron Oliver Orlstoy's shock when his daughter, Liana, declares she is engaged to Prince Ares, the third prince. Oliver, a devoted but realistic father, immediately dismisses this as Liana's overactive imagination, a trait that has caused her to reject many suitors. Liana, however, insists it's real, recalling a dinner with Ares. Oliver, though fond of his daughter, tries to bring her back to reality, warning her of the severe consequences of disrespecting royalty, even if only in jest. Liana, realizing the gravity of her fabricated engagement, becomes flustered when Oliver questions if she's told anyone else. She confesses to having "lightly spread" the news, revealing her delusion is more widespread than Oliver initially feared.
Their conversation is interrupted by a summons from the royal castle. Oliver accompanies a hopeful Liana, fearing repercussions for her actions. They are met by Lorka, a young servant of Prince Ares. Lorka confirms Liana's fabricated engagement is the reason for their summons but reassures Oliver that Prince Ares is too benevolent to punish a woman for such a rumor. Liana, however, maintains her delusion, stating it's not a lie in her mind. Lorka presses her on how she would take responsibility if the situation escalated, to which Liana defiantly replies she would offer her head. Liana then launches into an elaborate, passionate, and lengthy explanation of her love for Prince Ares, detailing his appearance, physique, and a past act of kindness towards a kitten, much to Oliver's astonishment and Lorka's barely concealed reaction.
Lorka, seemingly affected by Liana's fervent declaration, proposes they speak directly with Prince Ares. Despite Oliver's apprehension, Liana eagerly accepts. They are led to Prince Ares's private chambers. Prince Ares, a young man with a regal demeanor, acknowledges Oliver and Liana. He dismisses Oliver's attempt to kneel, stating he is not yet worthy. Ares then addresses Liana, stating he has no intention of punishing her for the rumor, even offering to persuade his father if necessary. However, he then kneels before Liana and apologizes, revealing he is already betrothed to a princess from another country and has no intention of marrying anyone else. Liana, devastated, accepts his refusal.
Back in the reception room, Liana weeps over her unrequited love. Half a month later, the "fake engagement" incident has become a known, albeit embarrassing, part of Liana's reputation, with most nobles dismissing it as her usual delusion. Oliver, trying to cheer her up, receives a letter addressed to both him and Liana. To his surprise, it is from Carlos, the sixth prince, who has renounced his claim to the throne and is a mysterious figure. Carlos proposes marriage to Liana. Liana, however, firmly rejects the proposal, stating she doesn't know him and it would be disloyal to Ares to immediately accept another royal.
Before Oliver can arrange a formal refusal, a second letter arrives from Carlos. This letter reveals that Lorka was actually Carlos in disguise. Carlos apologizes for his methods and asks Liana to be his "tea party friend," explaining he wanted her to know him before she rejected him. Liana, though finding his methods unappealing compared to Ares's "manliness," agrees to the tea party invitation to avoid offending Ares. Oliver, while initially wanting Liana to accept Carlos's proposal for the sake of their family, ultimately decides to support his daughter's decision, content that she has regained her spirit.
