The protagonist, a voracious reader, learns about the highly anticipated VRMMO "Abundant Feasibility Online" from a news report and his younger sister, Haruka. The game is notable for its unprecedented success in extending perceived time within the game, allowing players to experience hours within the game while only minutes pass in reality. This revelation sparks the protagonist's primary motivation: to play the game extensively to read more books than he could in real life.
Haruka, who was invited as a beta tester, manages to secure an extra invite for her brother. The protagonist spends time researching the game's intricate mechanics, including its diverse races, classes, skills, and status system (HP, MP, Strength, Durability, Agility, Intelligence, Magic Power). He learns about the importance of skill levels, arts, and potential for unique skill and art combinations.
Through Haruka's connection, the protagonist acquires a VR capsule-type machine, initially intended as a spare by Haruka's friend, Ruri. After setting up his character, "Wing," with a focus on non-combat roles like "Tamer" and "Librarian," and selecting skills such as "Taming," "Stealth," "Dark Magic," "Language," and "Reading," he begins the game. His initial setup is met with bewilderment by Haruka, who has chosen a more combat-oriented "Beastkin (Kitsune)" race with a "Sorcerer" and "Seamstress" class.
The game's tutorial introduces the world of "Abundant," a chaotic realm where players are encouraged to foster understanding through interaction. The protagonist learns about the comprehensive guild system, rules against malicious behavior, and the consequences of rule-breaking, including the potential for account deletion and legal repercussions. He also discovers the existence of titles, which can be earned through various achievements.
During the tutorial, Wing's exceptional "Reading" skill allows him to rapidly gain proficiency, learn the "Speed Reading" art, and acquire the "Talented" title, astonishing the tutorial NPC, Navi. He also earns the "Navi's Favorite" title for his friendly interaction with Navi.
Upon entering the game world, Wing's immediate goal is to find a library. However, he discovers that accessing the library requires a significant deposit of 10,000 Laran, which he cannot afford as a starting player with zero funds. He learns that librarians can use guild funds, but this requires a higher guild rank and librarian level, which he currently lacks.
A stroke of luck occurs when he discovers the General Guild's reference room, which contains books he can read for free, albeit with the condition of not removing them. While organizing the scattered books, he gains experience and learns the "Monster Knowledge" skill, further solidifying his strategy of acquiring knowledge through reading. He also obtains the "Meticulous" title for his preparatory actions.
Wing and Haruka agree to pursue different paths initially, with Haruka joining a party for faster progression and Wing focusing on his reading-based strategy. Wing plans to utilize his "Tamer" and "Librarian" skills, combined with his titles and the "Monster Knowledge" skill, to find and tame monsters that are not actively hostile, while also completing low-rank town quests to earn money and further his knowledge. He realizes that his initial plan of simply reading in-game is only the first step in a more complex strategy.
