Atami Sho longed to be a protagonist (hero).
Masked heroes who defeat monsters are good.
Giant heroes who defeat giant monsters are also good.
But a classic hero, clad in armor and wielding a sword to defeat demons, is truly exceptional.
Sometimes fighting, sometimes saving, sometimes beloved by the beautiful girls he saved, sometimes disheartened by evil, losing his way, lamenting his purpose...
Yet still advancing forward, towards the future—Sho admired such classic protagonists (heroes).
However, his first life ended without ever walking a brilliant path.
“We are truly sorry for this mistake.”
“As an apology, your next life will be in the world you desire. Yes. Uh, yes... yes?”
“Uhm, so you wish to be a hero, is that it? Haa... that's an unusual wish.”
“Understood. Then, in the world where you live next, it will be as you wish. Yes.”
“Then, off you go.”
“Phew. For a moment, I wondered what would happen... Huh? What is it? Wait, what he said wasn't a character named Hiro, but a Hero. Meaning, a protagonist?”
“.........Wait, no way. His next life, far from being a protagonist, is an evil-aligned mob character. Wh-wh-what should I do...?”
This is a story set in the world of a certain sword-and-magic, command-style RPG, commonly known as a “depressing game” (utsu-ge).
It's the story of a mentally unstable mob character, possessing a noble's cannon-fodder lackey, who believes himself to be the protagonist. With the spirit of “But I'm the protagonist, so everything will work out!”, he unwittingly and nonchalantly smashes through the low evaluations from those around him (due to his villainous role), the depressing plot developments, and the mastermind's machinations.
Several chapters are being serialized in advance on Kakuyomu.
