The protagonist, Machio Hiraku, a 39-year-old man who spent his final years in hospitals due to a black company job, finds himself facing a god after his death. Instead of reincarnation, he is transferred to another world, with his body miraculously healed and rejuvenated to his late teens or early twenties. The god explains that this transfer benefits the god, and Hiraku's only task is to live and enjoy his second life. Grateful for his newfound health and youth, Hiraku requests three things: immunity to illness, a life in sparsely populated areas due to past negative experiences with people, and the ability to speak the local language. The god grants the first two and assures him the language barrier is covered as part of a "beginner's pack."
When asked about his aspirations, Hiraku, surprisingly, expresses a desire to farm, stemming from a childhood experience. The god, unable to directly grant this wish, provides Hiraku with a "Universal Farming Tool," a versatile implement that can transform into various tools like a sickle, saw, hammer, pickaxe, and shovel. This tool is personalized, always returns when thrown, and can be stored within Hiraku's body.
Upon arriving in a dense forest, Hiraku's initial survival instincts kick in. He discovers the ground is incredibly hard, posing a challenge for walking and farming. However, he soon realizes the Universal Farming Tool can easily break through the tough soil and even large tree roots, turning them into fertilizer. He also finds that using the tool prevents fatigue, hunger, and thirst. Using the tool, he carves out a living space within a massive tree, digs a well for water, and creates tools like cups and plates. He also manages to start a fire using the tool transformed into a magnifying glass.
Hiraku establishes a routine, focusing on survival and utilizing his tool. He creates a more permanent shelter, a well-maintained toilet, and a campfire. He hunts a large, rabbit-like creature with tusks, which he successfully dispatches with the tool and prepares for food. He also begins to cultivate a farm, clearing land and preparing it for planting, though he lacks seeds.
His life takes a significant turn with the arrival of two injured, large black dogs. Hiraku, remembering his childhood wish for a dog, decides not to drive them away. He provides them with shelter, food (the remaining boar meat), and water. The female dog gives birth to four puppies in his shelter. Hiraku names the dogs Kuro (male), Yuki (female), and the puppies Kuroichi, Kuroni, Kurosann, and Kuroyon. The dogs prove to be intelligent and helpful, protecting his farm and bringing him prey.
Hiraku's farm begins to yield crops, surprisingly growing rapidly and producing familiar vegetables like carrots, potatoes, and tomatoes, as well as fruits like strawberries. He experiments with different cultivation methods, discovering that providing water and fertilizer significantly accelerates growth. He also faces challenges with pests and the sheer volume of produce. He crafts more sophisticated tools and furniture, including a stone griddle and pots, and begins to build a more permanent storage shed. The dogs, particularly the puppies, begin to develop horns, indicating they are not ordinary dogs. Hiraku's life, initially focused on solitary survival, evolves into a more communal existence with his canine companions, and his farming endeavors become his primary focus and source of fulfillment.
