High school sophomore Yamada Kazuki faces a lunchtime crisis, having forgotten his wallet and with his friends unavailable. Seeking a quiet spot, he heads to the school rooftop, only to find Sasaki Saki, a popular, athletic, and straightforward classmate, already there eating her homemade bento. Sasaki explains she's avoiding her friend Sakurai Haruka, who recently started dating Kazuki's friend Natsue Yuusuke, to give them privacy. Kazuki, surprised by this revelation, feels a pang of envy for their youthful romance.
His rumbling stomach exposes his predicament, prompting Sasaki, with a sigh, to offer him half of her delicious-looking bento. Despite Kazuki's embarrassment and a brief, flustered mention of an "indirect kiss," Sasaki, with her easygoing nature, dismisses his concerns and insists he eat. Kazuki is utterly captivated by the taste of her ginger pork and spinach, praising it with such enthusiastic, repeated exclamations that Sasaki blushes. He quickly devours the meal, expressing profound gratitude and admiration for her cooking skills, which she developed from a young age. Unconsciously, Kazuki blurts out that he'd like to eat her cooking again. Though initially embarrassed, Sasaki, blushing herself, offers to make him a bento for the next day, stating it's little extra effort and she enjoys cooking for someone so appreciative.
The following day, their rooftop lunch becomes a reality. Sasaki presents Kazuki with a colorful bento of meatballs, tamagoyaki, and vegetables. Again, Kazuki's effusive praise delights her. He notices she hasn't eaten much, and she shyly admits she was happily watching him enjoy her food. A casual comment from Sasaki about wanting to cook for an appreciative husband, combined with Kazuki's accidental remark about her making a good wife, causes both to blush intensely. Sasaki then offers to continue making him bentos daily, provided he gives her feedback and covers the ingredient costs, as she values cooking for someone who genuinely enjoys it. Kazuki eagerly accepts, cementing their unique daily lunch routine.
Later that day, Kazuki observes Natsue Yuusuke, his close friend, watching his girlfriend Haruka practice. Kazuki also spots Sasaki on the field, admiring her athletic figure. He learns about the gym's construction forcing combined practices. At home, Kazuki cares for his younger sister, Mai, warming up their busy mother's pre-made omurice. He discovers Mai unknowingly ate and enjoyed bell peppers in her meal, promising to keep it a secret.
The next day, back on the rooftop, Sasaki serves Kazuki stuffed bell peppers. He praises their lack of bitterness, making him wonder if his sister Mai, who dislikes bell peppers, might eat them if Sasaki cooked them. Sasaki then playfully teases Kazuki about "peeping" at the girls' practice, but quickly deduces he was likely invited by Natsue to cheer for Haruka. This leads to a discussion about their friends' relationship, and Sasaki then asks Kazuki if he wants a girlfriend. He admits he does, but finds it difficult. When he reciprocates the question, Sasaki reveals a deep insecurity, believing no man would want to date "someone like her," comparing herself unfavorably to her popular friends, Haruka and the famous Miss Contest winner Saegusa Chisa. Kazuki, internally disagreeing, realizes Sasaki's self-perception stems from never having been confessed to, unlike her friends. He attempts to reassure her of her attractiveness, but she dismisses it as flattery. He then expresses his sincere belief in deepening friendships before confessing, which Sasaki finds "old-fashioned" but also admirable. This leads to another round of blushing as she admits she'd prefer a sincere confession like his. Ultimately, Sasaki reaffirms her commitment to making him daily bentos, solidifying their burgeoning relationship built on mutual appreciation and a growing, albeit sometimes awkward, emotional connection.
