The story begins a few days after a victory celebration for a war against a neighboring country. Suddenly, members of the Imperial faction, including royalty and key nobles, who were rivals to the Aristocratic faction to which the protagonist's Count family belonged, died mysteriously. They all appeared to have died peacefully in their sleep, with faint red spots appearing on their skin near their hearts in the early morning. The protagonist, Ariadne Bernet, realizes that the poison used matches a substance she had been researching in secret. She discovers that her hidden research room has been accessed and some of the poison is missing.
Ariadne is apprehended by the Royal Knights, who suspect her involvement. Her father, the only other person aware of the hidden room, is also detained. Ariadne immediately suspects her father, who appears nervous and sweaty, confirming her suspicion that he took the poison. However, her half-brother, Claude, intervenes. Despite their strained relationship, Claude believes Ariadne is incapable of such a mistake and questions her involvement. Ariadne, though she didn't directly administer the poison, admits to creating it, making her indirectly responsible for the deaths. She realizes she's been framed by Marquis Herring, the leader of the Aristocratic faction, and that evidence has likely been fabricated. Her primary concern becomes her father, whom she believes was coerced by Marquis Herring into taking the poison. To protect her father, Ariadne confesses, taking full responsibility.
Her father, however, attempts to shift all blame onto Ariadne, claiming she acted alone to seize the Count's inheritance from Claude. This betrayal deeply shocks Ariadne, who had believed her father cared for her. Claude, however, defends Ariadne, stating her past actions always aimed to harm only him and never involved collateral damage to others. Her father continues to fabricate a narrative of Ariadne's hatred for Claude, fueled by their mother's death, which he attributes to Claude's arrival. Ariadne refutes this, explaining their mother's illness was unavoidable. Her father then reveals he had a paper detailing the poison's symptoms and an antidote in his pocket, which he claims he intended to use to stop Ariadne. This paper and antidote are presented to Claude, confirming the symptoms match. Ariadne realizes this was all part of a plan to frame her.
Ariadne expresses disgust at the elaborate scheme. Claude, angered, questions why Ariadne would protect him if she were the culprit. He then reveals his own resentment towards their father for his treatment of Ariadne and his decision to recognize Claude as an illegitimate heir. Claude is forcibly taken away by the knights, leaving Ariadne to ponder his unexpected defense. Claude explains he witnessed Ariadne's efforts to become heir and couldn't forgive the man who manipulated her. Ariadne, realizing her father never truly loved her, feels her world crumble. She accepts her fate, believing she deserves punishment for her actions. Claude promises to prove her innocence, but Ariadne insists on taking responsibility. Before being taken to the dungeon, Ariadne instructs Claude to destroy the contents of the hidden room and any incriminating letters, including those from Marquis Herring.
Ariadne is then struck from behind and loses consciousness. She awakens in an unfamiliar room, experiencing severe pain. A maid informs her that a week has passed. Confused, Ariadne realizes she is not in her family's mansion or the royal castle. The maid refers to her as "Ojou-sama" (young lady) and mentions calling for "Danna-sama" (master) and "Okusama" (mistress). Ariadne is shocked to see a man and woman who claim to be her parents, but they are strangers with different appearances and exhibit clear disdain for her. They dismiss her confusion as a head injury from falling off a balcony, a memory Ariadne doesn't recall. She learns the current year is Imperial Calendar 164, twenty years after her supposed death. The maid reveals Ariadne Bernet was a notorious criminal, the "rare evil woman" responsible for the deaths of royalty and nobles twenty years prior. Ariadne realizes she has been reincarnated into the body of Ariadne Philburn, the eldest daughter of the Duke Philburn family.
Ariadne Philburn, the original owner of the body, had been neglected and mistreated by her family, particularly her father, for reasons unknown. Her diary reveals her deep sadness and eventual despair, leading to her suicide. Ariadne, feeling a connection to the original Ariadne's suffering, decides to clear her name and restore her honor. She investigates the Philburn family's current situation, discovering her father, Nicholas, inherited the dukedom after his father and brothers were killed in the poisoning incident. She also learns Claude is now Claude Aquila Leinfelt, a prominent figure in the Leinfelt Marquisate, one of the four great noble families.
Ariadne Philburn's younger sister, Selene, confronts her, displaying arrogance and entitlement. Ariadne, now possessing Ariadne Bernet's sharp intellect and resolve, stands up to Selene and her parents, demanding equal treatment. She learns her father's justification for their mistreatment is that Ariadne's birth caused her mother to fall gravely ill, a claim Ariadne disputes. She suspects her father's affair and the subsequent harassment from his mistress were the true cause. Ariadne uses her newfound assertiveness to secure better treatment and begins to investigate the family's finances and the whereabouts of Eric, the son of the deceased eldest son, who she believes is a more suitable heir.
Ariadne attends a hunting tournament, where she encounters Claude and Eric. She uses the opportunity to gather information and subtly manipulate the family's dynamics. She learns her father's affair was indeed the cause of her mother's illness and that her mother's subsequent resentment towards Ariadne was fueled by the birth of a daughter. Ariadne also discovers that Eric is living under a new name and is a capable official in the royal treasury. She plans to use this information to eventually destabilize the Philburn family's position and restore Eric's rightful place. The story ends with Ariadne preparing to navigate the complex political landscape and seek justice for both herself and the original Ariadne Philburn.
