The narrative begins ten days before the world's end, a fact the protagonist, Tomone, accepts with resignation. Her immediate goal is to fulfill a final, vengeful act: killing her ex-girlfriend, Ruru. Tomone travels to Ruru's childhood home, where she encounters Ruru's younger sister, Riri. Riri, a studious and principled high school student, is immediately suspicious of Tomone, especially when she sees the axe Tomone carries. Tomone, initially forceful in her attempts to get Riri to reveal Ruru's whereabouts, is taken aback by Riri's unwavering dedication to her studies, even with the impending apocalypse. Riri espouses a philosophy of continuing one's duties regardless of the circumstances, quoting, "Even if the world ends tomorrow, I will plant an apple tree."
Over the next few days, Tomone persistently visits Riri's house, initially sitting outside and then gradually becoming more involved in Riri's life. She brings Riri food, shares meals in the garden, and eventually, after Riri leaves for school, breaks into the house. Tomone begins to cook for Riri, clean the house, and generally makes herself at home, framing it as a mutually beneficial arrangement. Riri, though initially resistant and wary, starts to accept Tomone's presence, particularly her cooking and domestic help.
A significant turning point occurs when Tomone sees Ruru's picture on Riri's phone wallpaper. This encounter triggers a realization in Tomone: she has largely forgotten Ruru's face, the object of her intense hatred. This discovery shifts Tomone's focus from revenge to a more immediate desire for connection and experience in the remaining days. She begins to flirt with Riri, engaging in playful teasing and physical intimacy, including kisses. Riri, despite her initial shock and protests, gradually reciprocates, her reactions often described as "honest" and "amusing" by Tomone.
As the world's end draws nearer, Tomone's desire for revenge against Ruru wanes, replaced by her growing feelings for Riri. She starts to see Riri's innocence and earnestness as a stark contrast to Ruru's perceived arrogance and betrayal. Tomone confesses her love for Riri, and after much hesitation and a series of escalating intimate encounters, Riri reciprocates, admitting she loves Tomone too. Their relationship deepens, culminating in them spending their final days together, sharing meals, making a cake, and experiencing intimacy.
On the last day, Tomone and Riri decide to watch the sunset together. They share a final kiss, and as they continue to kiss, the narrative fades to black, leaving the exact moment of the world's end ambiguous. The story highlights the contrast between the impending doom and the quiet intimacy that develops between the two women, suggesting that even in the face of annihilation, human connection and love can emerge.
